Welcome to my world!

I retired in 2001 after thirty-five years in education as an English teacher and high school guidance counselor.

I began writing my biweekly Mike's World humor column for Midwest News on May 1, 2005.  I wrote my last article for column on January 15, 2014, a nearly nine-year stretch that resulted in 203 original articles.

I've been fortunate.  Since 2010, 4RV Publishing has published my novel,  my two children's picture books, my humor book, and my Billy Beechum chapter book.  See below for more information about each of my books.

I am a field editor for Our Wisconsin and have written several features for the magazine.  Check my blog for more information and related pictures.

I give humorous presentations.  If you'd like me to speak at one of your organization's meetings, please contact me.

I look forward to hearing from you!

My e-mail address is MikesLittleWorld at gmail dot com

Of course, you'll need to put that into a regular e-mail format.

 Books by Mike McNair

This isn't My Bed!  (4RV Publishing March 2019) is a children's picture book based on a bedtime game Nancy and I played with our two children over 40 years ago.  Every time we pretended to think weird places were their beds, they'd laugh and yell, "This isn't my bed!"  As a result, Dundee and Brooke loved bedtime. The Elliot family plays the game just like we did. Little Emma loves going to bed because she gets to play the game, and it turns Emma's bedtime into Poppa Elliot's favorite 5 minutes of the day.

Your child will want you to read the book over and over so she can shout, "This isn't my bed" along with Emma.  The 5 minutes before bedtime may become your favorite time of the day, too.

Billy Beechum chapter book

Billy, the best detective in fourth grade, has a knack for figuring things out.  His friends include petite Emma Pringle, who has more energy than six average kids; Madison Nelson, the smartest person in the class; and tall, athletic Spider Simonson, Billy's best friend.  Samuel Jenkins, a famous children's mystery series author who is in his mid-seventies and confined to a wheelchair, oversees the children's adventures.  Billy believes Samuel is "almost magical."

Billy Beechum and the Hooticat's Secret (4RV Publishing October 2016) is for children ages 7 & up.

When his father is sent overseas with his National Guard unit, Billy misses him so much, he mopes in his room for days.  New neighbor and famous children's writer Samuel Jenkins gives him a special gift, an exciting mystery to solve.  In the process of solving the mystery, Billy learns one way to cope with the loss of his father.

Tales from Mike's World (4RV Publishing April 2013) includes sixty-six short tales based on my Mike's World humor column.

That's me relaxing in the hammock.  The boy in the dunce hat and graduation gown is from one of the tales. The man playing treetop music is from another tale.  The book even includes the most famous story hardly anyone knows I wrote that's been read by millions on the Internet.  I wrote it in 2002, and it's still popular in the Internet today.

Sammy the Shivering Snowblower (4RV Publishing October 2011) shows the importance of being responsible, even when it's not easy.  Sammy hates the cold.  It "freezes" his controls.  The time comes when he must save the day and clear the drive.  But can he do it?

Beautifully illustrated by Ginger Nielson, Sammy the Shivering Snowblower makes a perfect birthday or thinking-of-you gift for children 3 & up.

A Distant Summer (4 RV Publishing May 2010), a coming of age story set primarily in 1954 southern Indiana,  was voted Best Novel of 2010 by the annual Preditors & Editors Readers' Poll released February 1, 2011.

The novel follows the adventures of eleven-year-old Mike Long and his fifth grade friends.  Harmless secret agent games with Squall Baby, one of the boy's pet pigeon, suddenly take a dangerous turn.
